Some people question whether it is ethical to use animals in medical research. An equally important question might be, would it be ethical not to?

Animal research plays an essential part of the process to understand disease, ensure new medicines are effective and are safe to test on people. No regulatory authority would allow patients to have a medicine that isn't tested on animals. Unfortunately the choice is a stark one, if animals can't be used in research there will be no new medicines. Without animal research, treatments for many chronic illnesses like cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer's disease and HIV/AIDS would not have been developed. We had two animal technicians live online on to discuss how laboratory animals are cared for and how studies with animals are vital for the future of medical advances.
