H: Vicky Letch, host
J: Jasper Garvida, designer
H: Hello and welcome along to the Lifestyle Show, I'm Vicky Letch. Now then, the summer is I'm afraid to say nearly over. I know! But fear not, with each new season comes a whole new fashion range to get us all excited. This autumn is no exception and today I'm truly thankful to be in the presence of the hottest new up and coming fashion designer and winner of Project Catwalk, Jasper Garvida
J: Hi
H: Hello you!
J: Hi
H: We're all very excited, of course I'm going to kick off by saying massive congratulations
J: Thank you
H: On a momentous and well deserved win
J: Thank you
H: How has the whole experience changed your life?
J: Well it's been amazing, I guess now people are more aware of my work and what I do, and stuff like that. I've been busy, creating this collection that you're going to see today for oli.co.uk and yes - so it's been exciting for me
H: And in turn very exciting for us! So the collection that we're seeing on Oli, would that be your autumn / winter collection?
J: Yes, this is my first collection for Oli and it's for autumn / winter. Yes it's quite special because this collection was based on the collection that I've shown for Project Catwalk so
H: Ok
J: It's exciting
H: And - it is! That's going to be our buzz word I think, we're all very excited. And you are surrounded by your wares
J: Yes
H: Behind you, your little babies
J: Yes, there's quite a few of them here actually. This is the dress that it's an evening wear, heavily embellished
H: Yes
J: Around the neck, in chiffon and crepe, and actually right here is my favourite shirt which is georgette and sequins
H: I have to say it's not just your favourite shirt, when I came in, there's a young lady and you know who you are, who said Vicky you've got to come and see this shirt. I mean it is killer
J: Yes
H: It's beautiful and I have to congratulate you on a range that I believe is truly versatile as well
J: Yes
H: You could really make these items work
J: Yes
H: In very different ways
J: Absolutely you can wear them during the evening or during the day. This piece, for example, the white shirt which I truly love, I mean you can dress it up, dress it down with a pair of jeans
H: Yes
J: You know, and there's also like a couple of pieces over here that is in black, we have the bolero, which I think should be in every woman's wardrobe
H: Did you hear that girls? Write that down. Before we carry on I just want to let you all know at home of course we are live, so if you have any questions at all, use Jasper while he's here, any queries, all you have to do is write your question in your box on the screen and press submit and we'll try and get them all answered. So we are facing autumn, what sort of trends can we expect to find for this season?
J: Well for this season's colour, there are quite a lot of muted greys, black is in again
H: Yes
J: And white or ivory, but you have to think about some colour as well, you need to inject some colours in there so maybe something like hot pink or purple
H: Very nice, very nice, I like that. So you are actually working for the Fusion range on the
J: That's correct
H: On the Oli website, and other collaborators I believe are Jodie Kidd
J: Yes
H: Jasmine Guiness, PPQ and Maria Gretch Vogel, they've all contributed to
J: Yes, yes
H: A very strong collection, I've had a little nosey already
J: Yes, yes
H: But the very exciting thing about this, it really is truly a revolutionary way of buying online isn't it?
J: Yes I mean the great thing about shopping at online for oli.co.uk is you can actually be more interactive with what you're doing
H: Yes
J: For example it's not so there is a more of a personal touch to it
H: Yes
J: When you're buying online at Oli. You can actually see the garments move, you can see how it fits on the body, proportions. Usually when you buy online you just see a flat photo
H: Yes
J: And this is quite 3-dimensional which I think is great and I think is quite exciting and new in terms of online shopping, as well as you know, there's a personal designer touch to it
H: Absolutely
J: That you're not going to get anywhere else. These pieces are specifically designed for the Oli customers, and it's great to know where your designs are coming from, where your clothes are coming from
H: Yes
J: Because there's a story behind it
H: Absolutely
J: It's great, so
H: And like you said, totally interactive
J: Yes
H: And it is, the customers chance to really step into these clothes
J: Yes
H: With video links. If you look down here we'll take a look at that right now
Video footage
The collection for autumn / winter and the colour palette that I've chosen are muted greys, black, ivory and purple. And it's my first collection for Oli. There are pieces in the collection, which is quite versatile, which can be worn with other outfits, for example the classic white shirt which is a see-through white shirt. It can be worn indoors or outdoors. It's a very sexy shirt, but you know there's nothing wrong with that I kind of like that. In the collection there is a great cocktail dress that moves beautifully. It has pleated frills and it has this satin bow for detail. It can be worn by many different women, body shape-wise. It's very versatile, it can be worn during the day and the evening, if you want to go to a party
H: Wow that is massively unique isn't it? So I would watch the video and then I could just click on the image of say the dress ,because I like the way she was shaking it in the dress
J: Yes, yes
H: And then it would go into my shopping cart as well?
J: Yes, yes
H: Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. I have to say I love your mix of fabrics, it is quite an unusual mix of sort of the sort of very flowing materials with the big sequin sparkles
J: Yes
H: Are we being glamorous again?
J: Well you know every girl wants to be glamorous you know and this is the chance for them to actually select these pieces and add it into their wardrobe. Glamour is big this season, you're going to see a lot of embellished stuff on the catwalk
H: Yes
J: And you know if you can't afford high the designers, you can actually buy it, the look
H: Yes
J: On oli.co.uk and they're quite affordable so it's something that - this chance doesn't come along that often, so I think everybody should go and buy online
H: Yes absolutely. Now as I said we are live so keep those questions coming in. Bridey, thank you very much for your question. Bridey wants to know dear Jasper it's like dear John he doesn't know what I'm talking about! If you could style anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and why? And ps. Can I have your autograph?
J: Oh no! Hi Bridey. If there's anybody that I could style I would love to dress Roisin Murphy
H: Oh yes
J: I love her style, I think, you know I love glamorous women who has an edge to them
H: Yes
J: I like her style a lot and probably Beth D Tobe
H: Oh interesting, I like that
J: I know. I know, I mean I love every type of woman, so it would be great, or it would be an honour for me to dress her so
H: So Beth, if you're watching call this man. I must say that's one of the first things I did notice about your collection, I think you are looking at very versatile in terms of generational
J: Yes
H: And in terms of shape as well. You haven't just designed something you have to be waif-like, you can have some shape and still wear your clothes
J: Yes
H: Which is exciting for girls like me. Very exciting. So well done for that one! Duncan, Duncan May thanks for your question, Duncan wants to know what are the big colours for this coming winter?
J: For winter 08 / 09 you're going to see a lot of greys. Different there are different shades of greys, from the muted ones to the very strong ones. There's some black as well, like I said earlier there's a touch of colour into it, like most likely it's going to be the berry colours
H: Lovely
J: So all the pinks, and the purples, so you're going to see a lot of that
H: So is it more that we're looking at sort of a base of those muted colours with a splat of
J: Yes, I mean that's how colours would stand out. For example we have a cocktail dress over here which is all in black, you know that 50s Audrey Hepburn shape, and if you add a touch of colour through a skinny belt, a shiny patent belt in pink, in hot pink, that would just accentuate your waist. If you use for example a shirt like this and match it with for example skinny jeans and you add a splash of deep purple handbag
H: Yes
J: That would just complete the look
H: Ok. We're going to be done here in about 10 minutes, I don't suppose you want to have a little moochy around the shops? Right Jemima, Jemima says as a top end fashion designer are you automatically a bit averse to the high street or would you be happy to design or tweak existing designs to appeal and be affordable for the everyday shopper?
J: Well I've worked in couture and high street before so I'm used to that. But the great thing about high street clothes is that it allows designers to reach, to reach out with the majority, because not every woman's going to wear couture, and we can't afford it. I mean I certainly can't, but what's good about high street clothes is that it is accessible and affordable and everybody needs fashion. Everybody should be able to afford fashion, that's my philosophy anyways. So yes I have no problem whatsoever with it, so
H: And I think in particular over the last couple of years everything has become so accessible and actually it's difficult it would be more difficult not to be able to keep up. It is quite easy to keep up with the trends
J: Yes I mean what I've personally, I think the consumers are getting smarter because before people would save up money to buy a ridiculously expensive garment, where now it's like I can buy something expensive and mix it with something that I've got from the high street
H: Yes
J: And I think that's a very smart way of dressing up. It's practical as well. So if you see something nice and classic on the high street, get it, you know and mix and match. So that's my philosophy anyway
H: I like it, I like it. Dailygoss.com hi. What are your influences?
J: There's well my influences for when I'm designing a collection usually it comes from everywhere, but I always put something personal to it, for example if for example a postcard that I've seen somewhere and I would think about the colours in there and I try to add that into the collection, or maybe something that I if I went to a fabric shop and I really liked the texture of a certain fabric, you know and how it feels against my skin, I'd add that into the collection. Influences can come from everywhere, anywhere in particular when I did this collection for Oli I went to Northern Spain and I was inspired by Salvador Dali's wife and that's how this whole range came about, so
H: Is it quite an unconscious process? I mean are you thinking right I'm going to look at this mountain landscape and I want to be inspired by it, or do things just capture your imagination and I think wow, I could use that?
J: It's quite easy for me to get inspired actually. I mean I can get inspiration from, for example these flowers down here. But the whole process of creating a collection does take time. It's not an easy job, but you know I'm a designer and that's what I do so it's fine
H: It's fine
J: It's fine
H: Hello to Daisy, Daisy Reed wants to know, I'm a mature student so I don't have a lot of money to spend on clothes. How can I look stylish on a budget?
J: Well what you have to do is shop at oli.co.uk. I mean everything here is affordable. I suggest to look stylish, style comes from within. You have to know yourself, you have to know your body, you have to know what looks good on you. The range that I've designed for Oli it works on different types of bodies, so you have to be aware of what you look like, your body shape etc etc, and choose wisely what you're going to buy. And also choose pieces that are classic. You don't have to go and buy you know expensive stuff to look good
H: Yes
J: I think style is not determined by how much or how expensive what you're wearing is. What you're wearing, but the way you put them together, so
H: and I also have to say Daisy, being a student I was there years ago but if you're really busy with exams, you don't have time to go shopping, great again that you can have a look at that video link, you can see these clothes moving which actually takes out all the woe of having to go to a sweaty changing room, trying the clothes on because that's what you want to see don't you?
J: Yes. I mean the great thing about like seeing the garments on someone is like some people when they go to the shop they're afraid to try things on
H: Yes
J: And my suggestion is you must see the garments on, you know because on a hanger it's not going to look good, but on a body it will look different. So the great advantage about this video is that you can actually see the garment on the body and how it moves in particular, because you can see a photograph of it on a body, but you're not seeing it moving, so this is quite new and I think quite exciting for a lot of consumers out there
H: In terms of where we are, in terms of London, because I know you're London-based. Do you think we have the finger on the pulse in terms of fashion? Are we still cutting edge or are there other cities out there beating us to it?
J: London is always cutting edge and it will always be, I think in my own perception of fashion, and that's why I came here to London because I love the fashion over here. Everybody seems to be interested in fashion, and they really care about what they look and stuff like that. I love it here, I love it
H: So did you study in London?
J: Yes I studied over here so yes I graduated about four years ago
H: Four years and look at where on our sofa! Four years, who would have believed it! Now I have to ask you
J: Yes
H: Because of everything that's going on, I mean you really have been propelled into the limelight here
J: Yes
H: Have you yet seen anyone wearing your clothes?
J: Yes I've seen a few people, I've dressed a couple of people as well to events, and stuff, and it's been amazing, I mean the opportunity to me, that was given to me to design for Oli is just I'm very grateful and you know it's been such a wonderful experiences going through Project Catwalk and now designing for Oli, it's everything I dreamed of. So I'm very happy and grateful
H: I don't not many people get to realise their dreams in this world so it's great, brilliant. Ok, Clarence thank you for your question. He says hey Mr Garveda probably slightly less aggressively you always look amazing whenever I see you. What do you like to wear when you're lazing around the house? I bet you still look lush! kiss hug, kiss hug.
J: Well you know it's like when I'm working I like to be free
H: Yes
J: So I don't wear a lot
H: Naked? Naked?
J: Sometimes! No I'm kidding, I'm kidding. No I just wear jeans and a shirt and stuff like that, but obviously when I have to do meetings and stuff I have to wear something more appropriate, but usually I'm pretty relaxed in what I wear, I tend not to overdo it. Well except when I'm going out
H: Yes
J: When I go out so
H: Now how far ahead are you of the game? So if you've now completed autumn / winter you're now working on -?
J: I'm now working on the spring / summer collection for Oli next year.
H: Ok
J: Which is exciting
H: Yes
J: No I love it. I love this collection that I'm working on, but at the moment I think we should focus on this collection because
H: Oh I thought we were going to get some insider information there
J: No
H: Darn it!
J: No I mean so yes it's been exciting for me this journey I think and it doesn't stop. I have another collection to design for them, so it's been good, it's been good.
H: So really ever since your grand title of Project Catwalk winner ladies and gentlemen, your life has flipped upside down but in a very good way
J: Yes, yes absolutely, absolutely. Yes I need to wake up
H: No stay asleep, it's lovely here
J: It's like I'm dreaming or something
H: So you have realised the dream as you said. Very quickly before we have to say goodbye what advice would you give anyone watching now who is thinking I want to be sat where this man is doing exactly what he's doing?
J: I suppose my advice to anyone is to to inspire and be inspired. You know and be optimistic about life. Life is never easy but if you're persistent and if you work hard then good things will come
H: That's beautiful! Thank you so much
J: Thank you
H: I've got to say he's got the sniffles,
J: I know I'm sorry
H: And not just a man cold, an actual real cold, so thank you so much for being so lively and vibrant
J: Thank you so much
H: And your clothes are beautiful
J: Thank you
H: Thank you. And thank you to those at home for joining us and for more information and of course to see examples of the new Fusion range click onto oli.co.uk and I'll see you next time. Bye bye
