They affect more than 8 million people in the UK every year and most will agree, there is nothing more irritating than mouth ulcers.

New research has revealed one in three of us regularly suffer from mouth ulcers, with many of us complaining of having more than one at the same time. For 95% of sufferers, mouth ulcers last for at least two days with 50% claiming that the pain caused them constant irritation.

Anyone can get mouth ulcers, although nobody really knows what causes them and apart from the obvious - biting our own tongue or cheek and it becoming infected, and they are often associated with stress, illness, tiredness, puberty and poor diet.We all know the old wives tales of rubbing raw garlic on a mouth ulcer or squeezing lemon juice on to it, but let's face it, these aren't proven to work and nor are they particularly pleasant!
