H: Vicky Letch, Host
R: Style advisor Rose Bentley
C: Cyril Andrino, co-founder Private Outlet
H: Hello and welcome to the Lifestyle Show, I’m Vicky Letch. Now we all know looking fabulous 24 /7 can really be quite taxing at times, we’ve got to know what to wear, where to buy it, when to wear it, and of course who to be stalking in the fashion stakes. You take your eye off the ball and you could be committing real fashion faux pas, which we just don’t want, do we? Don’t worry because I’ve been joined in the studio today by fashion advisor Rose Bentley and co-founder of Private Outlet Cyril Andrino, and they’re here to give us some tips on what’s hot and what’s not, so welcome to both of you, thanks so much for coming in to talk to us
R: Hi
H: Let’s get things underway by just having a little chat about what is in right now!
R: Ok well we’re going into Spring / Summer so there’s lots of colour around on the high street, so put your little black dress away for a season at least
H: No!
R: And you know have it to one side, but there’s lots of very rich blues and fuchsias and emerald greens. Lots of African tribal influences, in your clothes and whether you love or hate the 80s there’s a bit of an 80s revival going on, shades of Studio 54, neon and metallic’s – and then if you like the hippy look then you’ve got 70s, so you don’t actually have to put too much away from last year’s wardrobe but there’s some new things coming through
H: Oh that’s good, that is good news that we can sort of reinvent things we’ve already got
R: I was a bit scared the maxi dress was going to go out after last year and I loved that, but it’s in – and with a kind of a tie-dye effect this time, this time round
H: Ok, oh interesting
R: Yes
H: Now do remember of course we are totally live so if you have any questions at all just pop them in the box below, and then submit them to us and we will of course endeavour to get them answered for you live on the air. So we’re talking a lot about colour – would you say we’re injecting quite an element of fun into our wardrobe at the moment?
C: There’s an interesting trend right now, the woman tends to dress up very masculine. I remember about two weeks ago at the Fashion Week in Paris, the Karl Lagerfeld show, the models were dressing up like Karl you know, with the tie, the suit – so there’s really a sense of girls tend to dress up like men, as long as they don’t wear men’s underwear they’re fine
R: And the shoulder pads, no don’t worry about the shoulder pads, it’s a lot softer, more feminine lines
H: See because I was going to say Rose, I was looking forward to this – I did hear a rumour that the shoulder pad was coming back.
R: Well it’s a fairly shoulder pad-free zone round here,
H: Ok
R: I think it’s much softer, it’s more to do with that slightly wacky, as I say Studio 54 having some fun and certainly having some fun with colours, but I think the shoulder pad, we can wait a while for that
H: Ok
R: I for one will be waiting a long while for that!
H: Me too. Although I was thinking maybe it would balance out my terrible hips! Now we all know of course that the high street is pretty strong at the moment, they are feeding our fashion needs as it were. But it’s not always about the high street if you really want to be very unique about things, of course people would say straight away, go designer. But you don’t have to necessarily go to the shops to do that, you can do that online
C: You should do that online actually. Online is like the biggest department store ever. You can find anything you want, you can just be sitting and shopping in Milan or Paris or Madrid at the same time without moving from your chair. You can also – something that’s very fun – you can also be at work, pretend that you’re working but actually being shopping! And shop and buy anything you want online
H: Ok. Now obviously we are indirectly but very directly talking about privateoutlet.co.uk – a little stroke of genius, in my personal opinion. Tell us all about that and just what your – what the inspiration was for setting up the website?
C: Well basically we found out that not everybody lives in the main cities, so people live in smaller cities, smaller towns, and they still want to have access to all those brands, so with privateoutlet.co.uk what we do is we’re selling designer brands at 50 / 60 up to 70% discount, and with two different angles. First angle is selling the top major brands that everybody knows, Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, Diesel, Seven for all Mankind, stuff like that, and then there’s the more interesting angle, the second angle, we’re selling the designers that are very popular in one country and not necessarily in the others like French designers or Italian lingerie or Spanish and new trendy designers or UK designers that are well to be known in Italy – that’s this pan-European story that we’re building
H: Ok. So we’re saying of course that designers are a good route to go down if you want to get that different look, that unique look. If we want to sort of set ourselves apart from the rest as it were, what kind of shapes should we be going for in the next season?
R: Well I think what you say is very true, people want to have a more individual look, they don’t want to put something on that they’re then going to see their friend or maybe several friends wearing
H: Yes
R: As they’re walking down the high street. I think in Autumn / Winter we’ve seen a wider variety of shapes but I think what’s good news is that if you suit the looser fit, there’s lots of lovely loose flowing chiffon, sheer shapes, and if you like the tailored look then there’s lots there for you as well, but it’s not so over-structured that it’s that 80s shoulder pad look, it’s nice, soft tailoring – a kind of Miss Moneypenny with a bit of attitude
H: Yes. And do you know what, that’s something that I would say personally that I’m really very much enjoying about what’s going on at the moment, in that you can still get the maxi dress as we were saying we love the maxi dress, but it’s about cinching in at the waist as well if you want to do that so it’s really sort of catering for everyone at the moment I would say
R: Yes it’s much more about you, what suits you and styles that suit you. It’s actually very interesting because we’ve done some research that’s shown, in terms of celebrity style icons, we’re all looking at celebrity media and looking at what the stars wear, but Kylie is actually the number one style icon at the moment
H: Yes
R: And you might think it would be Victoria Beckham or Sienna Miller, but it’s Kylie and it’s a lot to do with, I think that individual look that she’s got, because she looks different every single day you see her,
H: Absolutely
R: And she’s trying different styles and she’s taking a bit of a pick ‘n’ mix attitude to her clothes, whereas with Victoria Beckham it’s much more of a structure, much more of a one designer look right the way through
C: Very fancy also
R: Very fancy, very – and also perhaps not as accessible
H: Yes exactly because we all look at VB and think well you look stunning, please eat something
R: Yes but that’s not what I mean –
H: But I also look at her and think, you know I couldn’t pull that look off, day-to-day you have to – you want the glamour but you have to get on with your everyday life as well
R: That’s right
H: So talking about finding something to suit everyone, let’s just take this opportunity to have a little look at some of the brands that we can grab at privateoutlet.co.uk. Have a look on there
Video footage
H: Ok so that’s just a selection of some of the brands that we can find at privateoutlet.co.uk – what other brands can we find?
C: That’s a small selection of what has been found or where you can find later. We have buyers all over Europe hunting for brands and hunting for designers, somewhere in Italy and UK and France to bring new things over every week
H: Ok, fabulous. Right, this is live as I said so thank you very much for sending in your questions, let’s just go to one of these questions. Steve has written in to us, thank you so much Steve – and he wants to know, “just how retro will style go, will people be wearing genuine antique clothing soon or will it always be about replicas?”
R: Well I think retro’s always going to be an element, I mean we’ve talked about 80s and 70s, some of the style tailoring is also you know, has got a 60s feel to it as well. I think what happens each time is that each new era, while they’re borrowing from that, they’re adding a little bit, you know a little bit of contemporary style as well, so it will never look exactly the same, but if you’ve got something vintage in your wardrobe that you want to dig out
H: Yes?
R: You know then don’t throw it away just yet and try it out. At the same time, if you want to go onto sites like privateoutlet.co.uk, and you see some of the echoes of that style in some of the designers, then that’s great and you can go with that as well, so anything goes I think
H: I love this anything goes, I find this really very exciting
R: Good news
H: Ooh, I was just about to go to my question and it’s disappeared – and it’s back again. Ok we have another question from Demelza – I hope I’m saying that right, very pretty name. Demelza wants to know “how long does it take for clothes to arrive?”
C: It takes average of 10 days
H: Oh ok, right. And I know that we had a question about ordering from one country but getting it delivered to another country, that’s – that can be done?
C: That’s not a problem, you can be in the UK and be delivered in Germany if you want, that’s not a problem
H: Ok, and it’s all about then – Private Outlet is about making these designer brands more accessible as we were saying about Victoria Beckham, yes she looks absolutely fabulous but maybe it’s not quite attainable for everyday people like myself, so is this all about making going designer shopping sort of very straightforward for people?
C: Well you see that people are buying online fashion more and more, especially searching for the bargains, they won’t have the good prices, they’re searching for that, so buying online through Private Outlet is a good way to get such a discount, of course and not pay a full price, and sometimes the discount can go up to hundreds of pounds on some suits
H: Wow
C: It’s a lot, it’s a lot
H: It’s so exciting, because this is – I mean – I’m a girl, I get so excited – but this is going to probably revolutionise the way some people shop, because there’s going to be lots of people that would have always thought, up until today, that they just simply cannot afford to do designer
C: Thank you, I’d like to think that Private Outlet is a revolution, I like that
H: Yes – we should have banners, we should have a protest, a march –
R: I think one of the other things it’s going to do is that point we made earlier, people are going to start experimenting, looking at designers they haven’t heard of, somebody that’s big in France or Germany, but we might not have heard about in the UK, and at that kind of discount you’re thinking well I’ll give it a go, you know a couple of weeks ago we had some fantastic Italian luggage and bags, you know not a brand that I’d heard of but beautiful colours, some of those rich colours that I was talking about coming through for the summer, they would probably retail at about 3 or £400 and they were huge, huge discounts, so you think great, I’ll try it out
H: Absolutely, absolutely. Mike – it’s nice to say the men are writing in to us, Mike wants to know “what do you think about the Spiderman style in fashion for next spring?” Mike – what are you talking about?
C: I don’t know how Spiderman dresses up –
H: I don’t know
C: He’s got very, very tight latex stuff –
R: A jumpsuit
H: I’m confused
C: I’m not sure
R: I think it’s the all-in-one and find the zip if you can – hunt the zip
H: Sounds like fun!
R: May be late! Maybe Mike is picking up on this idea of the jumpsuit and I think the jumpsuit is one of those trends that’s out there in the summer, not sure if it will last beyond this season but if you’ve got the figure for it – why not?
H: Absolutely. Ok – oh what’s this? Mike also wants to know “Mr Andrino” – that’s quite official isn’t it? “I like so much your look – can we find the same jacket in Private Outlet?” It is a good jacket. It is a good jacket
C: Well I’m usually dressed up from head to toes with clothes that I buy on Private Outlet – I mean sorry I don’t buy them, I get them! But it’s through Private Outlet. I got that but I’m not paying, but –
H: Ok. Right let’s move onto accessories because we’ve had a good chat about trends and styles and colours, but of course it’s about accessorising, and that’s – I think – quite an easy way just to change your look if you’re saying about just reinventing some of the clothes that we already have, how about adding those new accessories. You of course cater in that field as well – let’s take a look
Video footage
H: Ok so it’s still about the accessories, it’s still about the sunglasses, the shoes, the handbags – let’s have a little chat about handbags, I know they’re very much sort of oversized and patent and shiny and eye-catching - are we still going for that sort of look?
R: Well they’re still lots of over-sized, patent, shiny bags out there and you know we know as women that you can’t have a handbag that’s too big, because as big as it is you’ll always find stuff to fill it. But there’s a huge variety just as there is in the clothes we’re seeing this season. Clutch bags are in – again in some of those metallic shades. We’ve also got sort of over-the-shoulder – the whole variety and in lovely bright colours as well, so whatever your outfit you can dress it up or dress it down with your bag just as you can with your jewellery
H: Yes and also I suppose as you were saying earlier about the 80s coming back and neon coming back and metallics. If you don’t want to do that kind of thing head-to-toe you can just inject that little touch of those trends
R: That’s right
H: So it’s quite a nice way to do it
R: And it’s really like leopard – you know we’re seeing a lot of leopard print again, if you’ve got a leopard print coat and you’re dressed in one colour or black or cream it looks incredibly stylish. Too much leopard skin, you become Bet Lynch and you don’t want that
H: You don’t want that!
R: And it’s good, it’s a balance – and the same, we were talking about the African tribal look, lots of big chunky jewellery and accessories and again you can wear very plain clothes and it will really bring it to life
H: Yes, brilliant. Now just a personal question for me, please tell me that oversize glasses are still in, because I think they’re the best way to hide the night before!
R: well I’m going to be wearing mine this summer
H: Good!
C: I do wear oversize glasses I think that’s the Italian style that is still on right now
H: Ok good, that’s good to know. Underneath the glasses of course, make-up – what’s going on with make-up?
R: Well again we’re talking bright colours and in fact even if you look through this month’s glossies, you’re seeing kind of bright cobalt blues and people, you know really experimenting with brighter colours, and whatever your age and really just having that little bit of courage to mix and match – I’m even seeing black lip liner, I’m not sure
H: No!
R: I’m not sure I’ll go quite that far but there’s some pretty out there stuff going on
H: Wow
R: So again you can kind of tone back from that to whatever kind of event you’re making your face up for
H: Oh my gosh, and again I suppose it’s just another way to give you that little bit of glamour because we are being quite glamorous at the moment, wouldn’t you say?
R: I think that’s always a good thing
H: Yes
R: So you know you’re seeing lots of glitter, you’re seeing you know things like the Tango shoe for example, the T-bar shoe is very in
H: Yes
R: And going to be in for the rest of the year, but seeing some lovely designs in, you know spangly silver, spangly gold and you’re seeing that carried through into highlighter and into some of the bronzers that you can put through your hair, so you can really, you can really go as far as you like
H: And with the heels as you mentioned the tango shoes, I’m quite enjoying the little slight platform because it just adds that extra support to the foot as well, so although you’ve got that total glamour, it’s not like you’re teetering on ridiculous stiletto shoes
R: No, it’s comfortable that way. And also you’re seeing the cone heel, and I think that’s just something that started to come in last year and you know I looked a bit ascounced but actually they’re pretty comfortable too. Not as comfortable as trainers of course, and you can look very trendy in trainers
H: Or just nothing at all! Ok thank you so much to both of you, it’s really interesting to have a chat and of course very exciting to know that all of you at home now have this way of getting accessible designer clothes into your wardrobe at decent prices
C: More than decent
H: More than decent he says
R: Indecent
H: And lots and lots of different looks as well and of course difference sales, different promotions going on all the time?
C: Yes, almost every 2, 3 days there’s a new sale coming out
H: Excellent and of course if you like his jacket and you want it, have a look. Now listen have a look at privateoutlet.co.uk, I must let you know that it’s not live this very second, I’m just getting word in, at this very second it’s not live, but it is being worked on as we speak, so it should be live any moment. We were live but we’re now saying goodbye, so again thank you, goodbye, thanks for joining us at home
C: Thank you very much
H: I’ll see you next time, thanks – bye bye
