David O'Kelly wants to know: "Scott. If Scotland displays the same lack of resolve against England that they showed in the first half against Wales, do you think Matt Williams' position will have become untenable?"
Scott Hastings said: |
I think that Matt Williams will have a stay of execution because a lot of the players will have a summer off and this will allow them to work on their techniques and allow WIlliam's to plan the autumn internationals. At the end of the day William's doesn't coach players to miss tackles and give away interception tries. |
| |
Jim wants to know: "How do you think Scotland will approach the game tomorrow?"
Scott Hastings said: |
The six changes will make a huge difference, big performances will see some of the players secure their places on the Lions' tour. England have misfired throughout the championship but perhaps this is my heart ruling my head. Scotland have only won 4 times at Twickenham in over 120 years. |
| |
Jock McSporran wants to know: "Surely the threat of being forced into fourth place by the worst English side in recent years is enough to rouse Scotland into putting some fire back in their game. Can we win? Please tell me we can."
Scott Hastings said: |
I hope we can win. The longer that Scotland stop England from playing their natural game, the more pressure the England team will feel, but Scotland need to tighten its defense if we are to have any chance of an elusive win. |
| |
Steve wants to know: "Is beating the English still the be all and end all for Scotland?"
Scott Hastings said: |
In many respects it is, this is the oldest international rugby fixture and has thrown up some brilliant games in the past. The Grand Slam in 1990 was a brilliant experience from a Scottish perspective but in 1991 England beat Scotland in the semi final of the Rugby World Cup and in effect they had their revenge. It's still a great fixture and I'll be there tomorrow at Twickenham to cheer on the team. |
| |
Away from Scotland Mandy wants to know: "In your opinion do you believe that Wales will do the Grand Slam and beat the Irish?"
Scott Hastings said: |
Yes, I believe Wales can win the Grand Slam, they have brought this championship alive but face an Irish team that could spoil the party. Grand Slams are incredibly hard to win as England found in 1999, 2000 and 2001. |
| |
And this just in from Peter:"I agree that Wales will do it but what do you put Wales's success down to this season? "
Scott Hastings said: |
The foundation for Welsh success was their performance in the 1993 Rugby World Cup. That was when the passion and skill was put back into the Welsh Jersey. Wales can be proud of the way they have played over the last few seasons. |
| |
Ed Phelps wants to know: "Scott. The first 40 mins v Wales was utterly shocking and it's difficulyt to see where Matt Williams can go from here other than out of the door, barring a miracle v the Nigels. If he falls on his sword now or next season, should we appoint another foreign coach or follow the Welsh lead and appoint a Scot who understands the psyche of the players and the nation?"
Scott Hastings said: |
Williams has got an incredibly hard job. The Scottish dressing room does need a Scottish voice, Williams might be able to turn this team around and somewhere down the line a Scotsman will eventually take the pivotal role. Remember the seeds of change in Wales' performance were sown by a New Zealander. |
| |
Tim Straw wants to know:"Hello Scott. How do we get more people into Murrayfield? There were more Welshmen there than Scots on Saturday, which was depressing enough even before the match started."
Scott Hastings said: |
Simple, the team has to start winning! I was fortunate enough to play in a great team and it was harder to get a ticket in those days. I was there in 1975 when 104, 000 watched Scotland play Wales. |
| |
Shane wants to know: "Who has been your player of the Six Nations so far?"
Scott Hastings said: |
Your name sake, Shane Williams. |
| |
Mandy wants to know: "Like all of the teams England have played in this six nations championship, are you pleased they are still without Jonny Wilkinson?"
Scott Hastings said: |
No I am not pleased. Wilkinson is a special player, not just for his goal kicking but his all round football abilities. |
| |
Gary wants to know: "What's the future for Scottish rugby? Do you see chinks of light in the gloom?"
Scott Hastings said: |
To put ones faith back in the game you just have to go to a local Rugby club and watch kids play mini Rugby. As long as there are kids wanting to play for their country, you will always have a vibrant game. We need more people to get involved with the game. |
| |
Talking of mini rugby, Barney wants to know: "I'm a mini coach and grassroots rugby in England is thriving, partially buoyed by the world cup win and partly due to some sensible long term co-ordinated planning. How do we start building for the Scotland team in 10 years hence?"
Scott Hastings said: |
The clubs have to take responsibility to ensure that kids enjoy the sport. Let them free on a rugby pitch and allow them to develop their skills. Well done for supporting your mini club! |

Moderator : |
Darren B wants to know:"As well as the Welsh domination of the Six Nations, they've also won the Grand Slam at U21 and England have done the same at U19 do we have any hopefuls coming through in the next generation?" |
Scott Hastings said: |
Yes there are a couple of players in John Beattie and John Barclay both of Glasgow and there are some really exciting stars in the Scotland U21. |
| |
Sarah wants to know: "Is the club scene strong enough in Scotland to bring the next generation of players through?"
Scott Hastings said: |
It could be stronger but what needs to develop is more integration between the club game and the professional teams. This umbilical cord has been cut in recent years and Scottish Rugby has to recognise that its future rests with the clubs. The clubs also have to invest in coaching and facilities. |
| |
John Boulter is an overseas fan of Watsonians and wants to know: "I think the scottishrugby.org site is excellent. I'm a contractor working in Dubai, a big Watsonians fan and so seeing several minutes highlights of club rugby every week is superb. Long may your partnership with BT last!!"
Scott Hastings said: |
Thanks for logging on. Anybody who hasn't seen the video highlights should click onto scottishrugby.org where you can see highlights of the Six Nations BT Cup and BT Premiership. |
| |
Still on rugby at club level Sean Seaman wants to know: "Can we afford the third franchised team, or should the Borders be disbanded. So far as a team and an entity they don't seem to be delivering?"
Scott Hastings said: |
The SRU have already promised funding to the three pro teams for the next three years. What is also required is funding at club level to ensure that coaches bring out the best in club players so that they can make the step up to the professional teams and ultimately to a Scotland jersey. |
| |
Tim Coleman wants to know: "Good on you for putting your head in the stocks today, it can't be easy discussing Scottish rugby at the moment. It's also good to hear some honest comments about the future of our game. There are clearly real problems with the administration of the game in Scotland. What is your blueprint for creating the foundations for respectability at least at Celtic League, Heineken Cup and international level?"
Scott Hastings said: |
I'm sorry I cannot type you my hundred-page document. Simply everybody has to pull together. I've always believed that when you want to aspire to play for ones country you have to be totally dedicated to the cause and passionate in your dream. The professional teams have to perform at the Celtic League and with the leading players having the summer off this will allow the pro teams to train for the start of the new season. |
| |
Mozza has been watching today's chat and wants to know: "Is talk of passion enough to ensure that Scotland pull themselves up and become a great Rugby playing nation again?"
Scott Hastings said: |
Just ask Wales. |
| |
Dai and Michael want to know: "How much do you think the changes made to Welsh club rugby has influenced their National game and is the club scene strong enough in Scotland?"
Scott Hastings said: |
The difference between the countries is that the professional teams in Wales have been founded off the back of long established clubs. Whereas in Scotland the three professional teams are nomadic. For example Edinburgh take on the Borders in the Celtic League on Sunday at Murrayfield with a 7pm kick off. How do you create an atmosphere in 67500 seater stadium. That's not allowing the players to develop and does not provide them an atmosphere that they can revel in. |
| |
Mick the Munch wants to know: "I can't find club videos on either the Welsh or English RFU sites, how come you Scots get to see them?"
Scott Hastings said: |
BT have sponsored Scottish Club Rugby for six years and used their technology to showcase the sport at all levels. As an English fan you could still logon to scottishrugby.org and watch the highlights of the Calcutta Cup Match this weekend. |
| |
Thanks Mick, let's move onto the forthcoming Lions tour and Ian Redrose wants to know: "Is there a single Scot who has earned a place on the Lions tour?"
Scott Hastings said: |
Paterson is an exciting player who will be on a flight to New Zealand with perhaps Tom Smith, Gordon Bulloch and Simon Taylor squeezing in on the back of past reputations. Whether this is enough for Clive Woodward remains to be seen with only Chris Cusiter and Mike Blair as other hopefuls. |
| |
Tim House wants to know: "Surely there are better 15s than Chrissy Patterson - though he's a good player, and Dwayne Peel certainly has the jump on Chris Cusiter after last Saturday. Would you pick Jason White at 6 ahead of Worsley or Easterby? I think he deserves it"
Scott Hastings said: |
I'd agree with the Peel comment and White might have a chance. But it's whether Woodward looks outside the Six Nations and picks England's World Cup back row of Dallaglio, Hill and Back, now that would create some headlines! |
| |
And Charlie Matthews has his opinions too "Jason White, or assuming he is fully match fit, Richard Hill at 6 for the Lions on Saturday 25th June, my 41st Birthday. Surely Ajson is in with a shout?"
Scott Hastings said: |
Happy Birthday! |
| |
jkjlk wants to know: "Has Woodward got what it takes to deliver down under?"
Scott Hastings said: |
Yes, he is one of the great thinkers of the game. A good manager and a team of coaches behind them to get the best out of the players. Lions' Rugby is special as Ian McGeechan used to say. It earns respect and admiration from rugby players throughout the world and when I represented the Lions, it was one of the great experiences of my Rugby career. |
| |
Brian wants to know: "Who do you think should be Lions captain?"
Scott Hastings said: |
It's you Brian, Brian O'Driscoll! |
| |
Harry wants to know: "You were a great Lions centre - who would be your pick for the 2 centres in the Lions team?"
Scott Hastings said: |
Thanks for the praise Harry! O'Driscoll and Henson. |
| |
JPR wants to know: "Any Englishmen deserving of a place on the Lion's plane or should it just be the Welsh and Irish boys?"
Scott Hastings said: |
The Welsh and Irish don't mix as well as the Irish and Scotts but Woodward has the call. The fascinating thing about Lions' Rugby is that the coach has to find a common denominator among the four Home Union players. |
| |
Billy wants to know: "You've been there, how difficult is it to get players from different nations to bond and play together on a Lions tour?"
Scott Hastings said: |
Massive! There have been some great Lions' tours and some truly dreadful tours. But with Woodward's experience he will ensure that any apparent barriers are broken down to create a successful and harmonious touring party. I don't know if you have heard but he has come up with the tagline "the power of four" where he has been asking for players to increase their performance by the power of four. We should see some awesome rugby this summer. |
| |
Lee wants to know: "Do you think Jonny Wilkinson will a) make the Lions tour and b) ever be the same player again?"
Scott Hastings said: |
Wilkinson will be on that plane. In fact, he'll be flying it! But it is a worry that he has succumbed to so many injuries since that drop goal! |
| |
kiwikid wants to know:"OK Scott the Northern Hemisphere is getting better but do you think the Lions can really cope with our backs?"
Scott Hastings said: |
You've not seen a Lions' jersey mate, they will eat you to shreads. Remember, we are not playing super 12 rules. But in all seriousness you have latent attacking backs and this is why the series is so eagerly anticipated. |
| |
Terry has memories of tours gone by: "Any shouts of 99 this time?"
Scott Hastings said: |
Not with the video analysis referees touch judges and match commissionaires. Skill will win at the end of the day. Did you see that Baby was banned by the Six Nations committee for one month for head butting O'Driscoll? |
| |
Dick Mardon wants to know: "What's your greatest moment in rugby? Beating England in 91? Playing for The Lions?"
Scott Hastings said: |
The first cap for Scotland followed by the Grand Slam in 1990 and Lions' tour of 1989. I have some wonderful memories over my 11 years of international rugby. |
| |
Jake wants to know: "I play for my club minis at under eights and we have just won our county festival, when did you start playing, who was your club and how good were you aged 8?"
Scott Hastings said: |
I didn't have mini rugby and used to play in the backgarden with my three brothers. I didn't play my first game until I was 10 years of age but knew even then that I would play for Scotland. My club was Watsonians and if you logon to scottishrugby.org you will see a full resume of the club. Good Luck, stick in there... and maybe one day you might play for your country! |
| |
James Chipperfield wants to know: "I once flew out to the Hong Kong 7s. Seated across the aisle was your brother. The drinks trolley arrived and he handcuffed himself to it for the whole trip to Hong Kong. Most impressive. I was even more impressed by his performance the day after. Astonishing seeing what he had consumed. What is you all time favorite Scottish rugby, er celebration?"
Scott Hastings said: |
Gavin is actually in Hong Kong as we speak and he is in a bar in Wanchai! This weekend is the Rugby World Cup sevens and I would agree with you that this is the best rugby party on the planet. Closely followed by the Dubai sevens. |
| |
Penguin wants to know: "I've just been to your site and want to know how Scots can see videos of Scotland and Scottish clubs on the official site for free but we English fans have to pay to view online? "
Scott Hastings said: |
Us Scots are a very generous race but thanks to the support of BT and their sponsorship of Scottish Club Rugby we are luckier than you. Have you seen the action? |
| |
Jezza wants to know: "If you were in charge tomorrow what words of wisdom would you give the boys?"
Scott Hastings said: |
I'd ask them to think in silence what it means to wear the blue jersey of Scotland. |
| |
Marion wants to know: "Will there ever come a day when Scotland will not be the poor link in the home nations - ie: UK?"
Scott Hastings said: |
In the 70s Wales used to win Grand Slams every season. This Saturday will see them competing for a first Grand Slam since then. Scotland's turn will come again. |
| |
Bob wants to know: "Come on Scott, get off the fence! Give us score predictions for the matches this weekend?"
Scott Hastings said: |
Forty points - twenty-four... |
| |
Scott Hastings said: |
....Wales to win the slam with a last minute drop goal. |
| |
